The Department of Oral Medicine includes the following as part of its curricular and clinical responsibilities:
  • Diagnostic sciences
  • Oral medicine
  • Special patient care
  • Acute and chronic pain management
  • Clinical decision making
Each of these areas have specific components that deserve further description:
Diagnostic sciences: include activities in physical and oral diagnosis, patient assessment, including history taking and application of medicine to dental case management.
Oral medicine: involves the diagnosis and non-surgical management of diseases of the mouth and compromised patient; including mucosal lesions, salivary disease, and dysfunctions including xerostomia, and other neurosensory oral complaints such as taste dysfunctions, dyskenesias, and atypical oral reactions. Principles of case management and treatment planning are also a component of the Oral medicine area, including the use of the problem-oriented record and use of a problem and case based approach to patient care.
Special patient care: includes curricular and clinical experiences in management of patients with disabilities which fall into any of the following groupings: physical, medical, mental, and developmental disabilities.
Acute and chronic pain management: focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of painful conditions of the head, neck, and mouth. Emergency odontogenic and oral pain, chronic orofacial pains and headaches, temporomandibular disorders, and behavioral issues associated with the diagnosis and treatment of pain are essential segments of these efforts.
Clinical decision making: is a component of activities that run through almost every aspect of the curriculum. Case studies and problem-based exercises are integrated into most courses and the clinical sessions.
Department Philosophy
It is the philosophy of the Department Oral Medicine at the Faculty of Dentistry of Gadjah Mada University to support the goals of the Faculty. These goals include Education, Patient Care Service and Research.
Future Research Direction
The Department will motivate and initiate research project, by providing opportunities for faculty and dental students in work study project to participate in research within the department
